Our Living Collection

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the leading Botanical gardens of the world, with our origins dating back to 1670. The living collection on site is home to one of the richest and varied collections in the world with over 13,500 individual species built up over centuries of global exploration. We are also a world-leading centre of excellence in plant science, conservation horticulture and education. With this, the environment and sustainability is at the forefront of everything we do on site and we aim to minimise our impact as we work. We have also taken actions to reduce our reliance on plastics and the presence of single use plastics in our operations.

Sustainable Wedding Floristry

With regards to the floral requirements as part of your special day, the approved suppliers we work with are in full compliance with our guidance which is in place to protect the living collection through our biosecurity policy and sustainability practices. This includes using locally grown flowers and botanicals to reduce flower miles and support local flower farms. The traditional green coloured floral foam ‘oasis’ is prohibited as it is has a large plastic content, is not bio-degradable and is also non-recyclable.

Grow our own

We grow our own seasonal fruit and vegetables in our extensive organic kitchen garden which is then integrated into our menus on site – thus helping to reduce food miles.

Other ways you can support The Botanics

We can also offer additional services to further enhance your day which we are happy to talk through with you whether your wedding is on site or somewhere else. Perhaps you would like to have plants from our garden shop as your table décor which guests can take home and enjoy and nature as a memory of the day. Individual packets of seeds for flowers or vegetables are also very popular as wedding favours.
